Disco Napping Do’s and Don’ts
A disco nap is probably the difference between going all night and calling it a night. Whether you’re in school or have a day job, the disco nap is nothing but your friend. Lets face it, we all accidentally fell asleep at 7 pm only to wake up 2 hours later and no where to go. Disco naps are that except on purpose. As a college student, I’m pretty sure I have some experience with disco naps. Here are some tips and tricks I learned to successfully disco nap.
1. Turn your phone off.First of all, you are probably going to be napping at a time when everyone else (even your friends) will be awake and most likely if you already have your plans, people are gonna want to hit you up so turn that phone off ASAP. The amount of times i’ve begun to doze off only to hear my phone ring. If your friends need you for the night, then they should want you well rested anyways.
2)Lock your doors. If your friends are anything like mine, on a Friday night they’ll just come in if its open. Basically its bye bye disco nap if you let them in. They’ll see you later and you’ll be way more energized by then.
3) OK my biggest problem was not setting an alarm. Its much more important than you think. The nights i woke up at like 11 pm and everyone was already at a party or at least ready to go and I was groggy starving and hadn’t even begun to get ready were probably the most annoying nights I’ve had.
I usually set mine for about and hour and forty five minutes. It takes me a while to fall asleep and usually I’ll average about 45 minutes. If I manage going longer, 2 hours is perfect.
3a) why 45 and 2 hours? I was once in a psych class and apparently 45 minutes is the length of an REM cycle and 2 hours is the length of about 2. To feel most refreshed after a nap stick to these two numbers, it hasn’t failed me so take my word on it.
4) DO NOT EAT BEFORE!!! If you happen to be like me falling asleep is a battle and when I’m excited for the night ahead of me, its much worse. Don’t starve yourself, but trust me, having an empty belly will help you sleep and if you manage your time right, then you will most certainly have enough time to eat and digest before the alcohol starts rolling in.
5) Be sure to take some time in your napping window to have some self reflection. It helps relax and sorts out whatever you may be thinking about in the night to come.
6) Make sure everything you NEED to do before your nap is done. Maybe you want to cook dinner before your nap so its there when you wake up. Perhaps you don’t think you’ll have the time to figure out outfit or if you’re a DJ like me, get that set list READY.
7) SEASONAL NOTE: In colder weather, be sure to keep warm during your nap, if I wake up freezing i don’t get warm the rest of the night and then i feel sick. So make sure you have 5 blankets and wool socks .
8) Probably the most important is keeping your light on. A low almost “candlelight” glow is perfect. In summer and late spring your disco nap will begin when its light out anyways, so you’ll be missing time and your body will get confused. Plus it helps to make you feel warmer when you open your eyes.
8a)Tip:You may be someone who must be in no lighting in order to sleep. If its important to you, get a timer for your light and then it will go on when your alarm goes off. honestly, that would probably be better anyways.
9) If your roommate (or just anyone) walks in and wakes you from your disco slumber, the best thing to do is stay calm, nap disturbances are probably worse than anything. (i turn into oscar the grouch.) Lay there, try to keep your eyes closed, if you concentrate maybe try to even lucid dream. if it keeps you up, meditate yourself back to full, happy refreshed conciousness.
10) If nothing works: It happens to everyone. You cant help thinking about what your boss thinks of your sales or how you did on that level 400 french exam and you just cant get to sleep. In that case, go grab the biggest coffee you can get your hands on and put some baileys in it and hope for the best.
So thats my system. Think of Disco Naps as a meditation. Its friday (although in recent weeks it has been tuesdays and thursdays for me), you had a long week, and the only thing stopping you from being so absolutely ridiculously crazy is how fucking tired you are.
I want to give a special thanks to the young gentleman in the photo who fell asleep at Le Bain a few weeks ago. He certainly could have used a disco nap.

Club Friends Tip #1
Ordering drinks at any club comes with the problems like getting the attention of the bartender, and hopefully (s)he is skilled enough to read your lips. But what makes it easier is when you and your “go to” party friend share same drink choices. It’s like killing two birds with one stone and you only have to shout “whiskey sour” once and give the peace sign.
